US Army Distinguished Service Medal
Defense of Freedom Medal

This medal was awarded to civilians killed or wounded in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon Sept. 11, 2001. The four red stripes represent the four aircraft hijackings, while the single blue stripe represents the Pentagon.
Bronze Star Medal

This medal was awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement or service not involving participation in aerial flight. It was awarded to World War II holders of Army Combat Infantryman Badge or Combat Medical Badge.
Silver Star Medal

This medal was awarded for gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States or while serving with friendly foreign forces. It was derived from the 3/16" silver "Citation Star" previously worn on Army Campaign medals.
US Army Distinguished Service Medal

This medal was awarded for extraordinarily meritorious service to the United States Government in a duty of great responsibility. It was originally issued with European (unedged) ribbon ("French Cut").
Legion of Merit Medal

This medal was awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the US. It was issued in four degrees (Legionnaire, Officer, Commander & Chief Commander) to foreign nationals.
Distinguished Flying Cross Medal

This medal was awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.

Navy Cross Medal

These medals were awarded for extraordinary heroism in action against an enemy of the U.S. while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force or while serving with friendly foreign forces. It was originally issued with a 1 1/2" inch wide ribbon.
Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal
These medals were awarded for exceptionally meritorious service to the U. S. while assigned to a Joint Activity in a position of unique and great responsibility.
Navy Distinguished Service Medal (Est. 1919)

These medals were awarded for outstandingly meritorious service to the United States Government in a duty of great responsibility. 107 copies of earlier medal design were issued but later withdrawn. First ribbon design was 1 1/2" wide.
Navy Marine Corps Medal (Heroism) (Est. 1942)
These medals were awarded for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy of the US. However this medal was given for acts of lifesaving, action must be at great risk to one's own life.

Air Medal (Est. 1942)

These medals were awarded for heroic actions or meritorious service while participating in aerial flight.
Army Commendation Medal (Est. 1945)

These medals were awarded for heroism, meritorious achievement, or service.
Originally it was a ribbon-only award then designated "Army Commendation Ribbon with Pendant". It was re-designated as "Army Commendation Medal" in 1960.
